GaryCon - Global Con

Postby Boggan_Knight » Fri Jan 29, 2010 9:37 pm

Hi everyone,

Two years ago when Gary Gygax passed away, some of my friends and I decided that we should get together and celebrate the hobby in rememberance of him. We gathered enough for two tables of players, including the sons of a few of the long-term gamers in town (this was their first experience of gaming), and played The Tomb of Horrors. Heaps of character deaths and repeated statements of 'you're disintegrated, no save' later we all decided that it was a good day.

Last year we played 'Keep on the Borderlands', with some of the guys mentioning that GaryCon (as it had been dubbed) was the only game they played during the year. It became a way of contacting people we didnt see often and throwing down some dice. Via the Wizards forums, we invited others worldwide to join in, and we had a handful of folks decide to.

This year, we're going to be playing again, on the weekend of March 6th and we'll be going an "Expedition to the Barrier Peaks', for better or worse.

MirageArcana will be using March as D&D month - there will be some extra episodes with advice and adventure ideas, and we'd like you to join in the fun of GaryCon. Get some friends together, pick a module and go with it. It doesn't matter where, but we'd like to hear about it.

What we would also like is for people to share their GaryCon stories here - or even simply best D&D moments or memories. We'll highlight a few on the show and spend some time thanking 'the man' for the hobby we all enjoy.

We are having "Gary Con" tonight and tomorrow . . . sort of. One of our old gaming buddies just called and is passing through the area with his girlfriend. He's going to crash with us tonight, so we called another gaming buddy in South Carolina. He is going to drive up as well and spend the night . . . so we can get some gaming done. :)

I don't have any "modules" or anything "Gary Con worthy," so we ran to the used bookstore in the city. I found a tattered copy of I6, Castle Ravenloft. We don't have any AD&D stuff, so I'm converting it to 3.5 now. We'll see how it goes.

Mik didn't make it. :( He died in the belfry, killed by giant spiders.

The bell rope was just hanging there, begging to be pulled. So he pulled it.

Stoopid Mik. :D

That sounds very cool. Although I will admit being deeply envious of anyone who has access to a used bookstore that would carry I6. However, I'm going to claim that Mirage Arcana drove you to Ravenloft :D

Kim_Possible, sometimes DMs love the one person willing to take a chance. Let's face it, if everyone played it safe, it simply wouldn't be enjoyable.

Glad to hear that you both had fun.

I certainly wouldn't have known anything about Ravenloft were it not for overhearing Law listening to the podcast.

It is a really great used bookstore. They are just down the road from the local game store, so they get a lot of people selling old books to buy new (apparently). This wasn't a collector's item or anything. It was the "silver anniversary" reprint, and it was in bad condition. It was in a box of old D&D stuff, mostly from the old 3.0 days.

If 3.0 is the old stuff I am now officially ancient

Maybe not such a bad thing, it works well for Dragons :P
